The stock Pathfinder Pro tires are tough-wearing, but less-than-impressive in terms of rolling speed and grip. This system provides a small amount of cushion for the handlebar only, and it does not change the geometry of the bike as it goes through its travel. It’s a 7.5-8/10 bike for me; there are things I would want differently, but I also can’t think of something else on the market that would better match what I’m looking for in a gravel bike. Our test bike tipped the scales at 21 lbs and 2 oz set up tubeless without pedals. I’m not a huge fan of the super-aggressive hood texture on the Di2 levers, but perhaps my hands have grown overly delicate since the end of my bike shop mechanic days. Photo: Iain Treloar. In addition, while the compression damping is adjustable, the rebound damping is not, meaning there are times when the front end feels like it’s recovering faster or slower than you might want it to. The geometry is a big departure from gravel bike norms, featuring a longer top tube, a shorter stem, a slacker head tube angle, and a longer front center and wheelbase. That said, I’m not sure that the concept works as well for all-purpose gravel riding as it does on mountain bikes. All Gravel bikes are delivered free to the UK mainland, 365 day returns & Price Match. No complaints with the Specialized Power saddle. Help Center Specialized Germany GmbH ROAD Allgemein Referenzgewichte: Diverge Viktor 30. The Comp Carbon comes with the new Future Shock 2.0 which provides 20mm of suspension between the stem and the headset with an adjustable damper. But on the S-Works model, it’s a more normal 90 mm. The Pathfinder Pro tires were a bit of a mixed bag on the climbs. As already mentioned, the Future Shock is pretty good as is, and likely quite a bit better than you’d think. The geometry changes include a longer reach, wheelbase, and chainstays, as well as a slackened head tube angle and a longer fork rake. The rear end also feels nice and stiff without feeling punishing, with little energy wasted through unwanted flex. The improved Future Shock 2.0 works well and helps to make this one of the most comfortable grvael bikes we've tested, and the addition of SWAT downtube storage is an excellent user-friendly feature that we thoroughly enjoyed. Reproduction without permission is prohibited. If you’re in the bell curve of rider shapes and sizes — and in the bell curve for how people will likely ride this bike — the Future Shock 2.0 will probably be fine. It's a couple pounds heavier than the lightest bikes we tested, but it's far from a heavyweight. Stem lengths are fairly short across the board, although interestingly enough, Specialized also varies stem length with particular models of Diverge, too. Although that head tube angle is more relaxed than before, the 71.25º figure on the 56 cm size is still almost 5º steeper than what Evil uses on its ultra-progressive Chamois Hagar, and its 57 mm trail dimension is not only essentially unchanged from the previous Diverge, but also well within the range of what you’d expect on a traditional endurance road bike (the Chamois Hagar’s trail, meanwhile, is a whopping 93 mm). Alloy DT Swiss G540 wheels Geometry of the Specialized Diverge 2021 Compared to its predecessor, the geometry is more progressive. Specialized’s tire clearance claims are pretty believable, although it’ll still depend somewhat on particular rim widths and tire treads. Twenty millimeters of suspension may not sound like much, but the Future Shock 2.0 actually works surprisingly well, especially when compared to bikes with rigid front ends. Three of the aluminum models comes with drop handlebars, and two, known as EVO models, come with flat handlebars and dropper seatposts. Overall, the frame shape is very clean and tidy. Additionally, the new Future Shock 2.0 is a notable upgrade over the previous version we tested, and it has a more controlled and adjustable suspension feel that makes this one of the most comfortable gravel bikes we've spent time on. Photo: Iain Treloar. That said, it doesn't feel particularly heavy while riding, though the additional pounds may make a difference over the course of a long ride or race. On the previous-generation Diverge, Specialized left a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of rear-end comfort to the goofy CG-R carbon fiber seatpost with its pseudo-flex head and elastomeric insert. The Specialized Hover Adventure Gear handlebar was quite agreeable and had a nice 12-degree flare, although we felt it was a little on the narrow side for dedicated gravel riding. Speed control duties are tasked to powerful GRX 810 hydraulic disc brakes and centerlock 160mm IceTech rotors. The new Diverge’s more MTB-inspired frame geometry certainly sets it apart from the mainstream. Our opinions were a little more mixed in terms of how we found the revamped frame geometry. I’ve had ample prior experience with Specialized’s clever down tube storage compartment, and fully anticipated its usefulness. Three cheers for the threaded bottom bracket! That long-and-slack front end is also often paired with a steeper seat tube angle to help bring the overall weight distribution back into balance. There’s a lot of height adjustment built into the Future Shock system, but this is as low as it goes. The Shimano GRX Di2 groupset on the Diverge Expert Carbon model works as expected, which is to say that it’s fast and virtually flawless. “To me, the Diverge is the middle ground between the gnarlier abilities of, say, a Cannondale Topstone Lefty, and something more road-leaning like a Cervelo Aspero or Parlee Chebacco. It comes with a 2 x 11-speed GRX RX810 drivetrain that has a huge range and shifts crisp and clean as we've come to expect from Shimano. A 100mm alloy Future stem clamps a Specialized Hover Adventure Gear alloy handlebar with a 12-degree flare. Tarmac Venge Roubaix Allez Diverge—each one dominates their respective category featuring the best technologies in the industry. Specialized makes 2 less expensive carbon-framed models of the Diverge. Iain didn’t find them as objectionable as me, but I found the casings to be thick and lifeless, and there’s a very narrow range of inflation pressures where they don’t roll horribly slow and yet still provide decent grip. The chainstays were also lengthened by 4 mm to 425mm. The stock Pathfinder Pro tires don’t help, either. That said, it doesn't feel quite as snappy or lively as some other bikes we've ridden, a slight tradeoff for its increased comfort through compliance. The component specification of the Comp Carbon build we tested was largely excellent on the descents. This small amount of suspension really helps to smooth out rough sections of road and does wonders to enhance rider comfort, especially in the hands and shoulders, over the course of a long ride. Otherwise, those looking to shave some weight from this bike would be wise to consider upgrading the stock wheels to a lightweight carbon fiber model. For sure, it does a very good job of squelching high-frequency vibrations and smaller chatter on dirt and gravel roads, and even tamer sections of singletrack. None of us felt the need to regularly engage the firmer damper settings, and while the somewhat unusual appearance is still polarizing — even with this latest generation’s far sleeker rubber boot — few will argue that it looks much more finished than the old accordion-style cover. Overall, we found the components of the Diverge Comp Carbon to perform well on the climbs. But with that shorter stem, modified weight balance, and quicker trail dimension, I found the front end to be more prone to wandering off-line on slower and/or steeper climbs. Specialized completely redesigned their Diverge gravel bike for the 2021 model year. With the new flats that have been added to the lower screws, it’s finally possible to truly lock the two bolts together to keep the headset from loosening. With loads of mounts on the frame and fork, this bike is a great option for bike packing or touring. The door of the SWAT compartment doubles as one of the bottle cage mounts, and it comes off completely when opened to reveal a large open space with a zippered storage bag to hold tools, room for snacks, layers, or whatever you choose. I can’t say I get on it and think anything much other than, ‘this is just doing what I need it to’.”, “That short stem, longer top tube, and longer wheelbase does make for a very stable bike,” added Dave. However, there’s now an oil damper to lessen the bounciness of the old design, and the compression circuit is adjustable on the fly all the way up to a locked-out position for when you’re riding exclusively on smoother surfaces. In a vacuum, you’d expect the generous trail dimension that results on those modern mountain bikes — it’s over 100 mm even on Specialized’s new, and very XC racing-focused, S-Works Epic — to yield a super floppy-feeling front end that’s slow and cumbersome through tight corners. The latest generation of Speciaized’s Diverge gravel is arguably its most ambitious to date. The handlebar-end Di2 junction box keeps things neat and clean. Despite the impressive tire clearances, there’s still space for a front derailleur. And yet despite the steering quickness, I occasionally still had to shift my weight more aggressively forward to get the front end to bite. SRAM’s disc brakes are arguably easier to control than the more “on-off” nature of Shimano’s stoppers, too, and my long-term experience with the Roval Terra CLX carbon wheels has shown them to be wonderfully lightweight and snappy, but yet impressively tough and durable as well. The Hover handlebar has a nice 12-degree flare and a bit of extra rise built in. Out of Stock. I don’t think I could happily settle for either of those extremes in a bike for my style of riding, so even if the Diverge isn’t ideal at either end it kinda straddles the two.”. And if anything, the taller bar position forces you to use the drops more often, where you have more steering and brake control, anyway. Like CyclingTips? From a road rider’s perspective or someone who’s got less experience of what good suspension can feel like, I think a lot of riders would just be stoked to have a bit of cush.”. “The suspension isn’t all that subtle if it’s getting hammered,” Iain professed. “And I didn’t really need to upgrade or modify things off the shelf.”. The Pathfinder tires work very well on firm and smooth surfaces, although they don't have a lot of bite when things get chunky or loose. Completely overhauled for 2021, the new Specialized Diverge features more tyre clearance, slacker geometry, a SWAT door, and Future Shock 2.0 suspension. To remove a wheel, you have to dig a 6mm hex tool out to use to remove the wheels. It also helps to keep the price of this bike below the $4K mark. Stiffness-wise, we weren’t blown away by the Diverge’s snappiness. The Diverge Comp Carbon comes thoughtfully built and doesn't really need any upgrades. “I don’t think it’s a perfect bike, but it has fewer compromises than many others I’d considered. Our Editors independently research, test, and rate the best products. That said, neither Iain nor I fell in love with it. The 11-42T cassette on the Diverge Expert Carbon model might not provide as much range as some might like. Speaking of comfort, the new and improved Future Shock 2.0 also impressed us on the climbs. Out back, Specialized relies on a more tried-and-true concept. In addition to a flat repair kit, I regularly stuffed a light jacket, one or two gel packs, and occasionally some arm or knee warmers in there (and yes, it all fits just fine). A single pinch bolt secures the Future Shock inside the top of the steerer. That said, we still feel it is a solid value considering its all-around performance, versatility, great build kit, and quality carbon frame. The rims are impressively tough, but they’re also a little heavy, and the straight 14-gauge spokes deaden the ride quality. The new frame design also features increased tire clearance with space for up to 47mm wide tires on 700c wheels or 2.1' tires on 650b wheels. Our size 58cm test bike measured with a 1060mm wheelbase, a 590mm effective top tube, and a long 401mm reach. We didn't notice the slackened headtube or lengthened fork rake having any effect on uphill handling, and the front end felt nice and planted on steep climbs. Material on GearLab is copyrighted. Innovative features like SWAT storage and Future Shock suspension only add to this bike's user-friendliness and comfort. Photo: Iain Treloar. Instead of dropping the chainstay as is becoming more common these days, Specialized just made the chainstay section a lot thinner. It’s hardly soft and spongy, but nor is it especially taut and explosive when you start smashing the pedals. The effective top tube length and reach were both increased by 14 and 10mm respectively on our size 58cm test bike. Since the driveside chainstay is partially solid, the rear derailleur line can’t be routed through it. Claimed frame weight for the FACT 9r version of the Diverge is around 1,100 g. The top-end S-Works version is about 100 g lighter, while the FACT 8r version is about 100 g heavier. E5 aluminum Diverge models range in price from $1,150 to $2,600. While it doesn't look much different, some of these changes were pretty significant and have noticeably improved its downhill performance. The frame has internal cable routing and integrated chainstay protection. Check it out! Nerd Alert Podcast: It’s time for the 2020 CyclingTippy awards! There’s still a decent amount of room around this 700×42 mm Specialized Rhombus tire, but it’s starting to get a little tighter. Specialized Diverge FACT 9r carbon, SWAT Door integration, Future Shock suspension, threaded BB, internal routing, 12x142mm thru-axle, flat-mount disc Whether your goal is to escape on gravel back roads, far from cars and crowds, or drop the hammer at the front of your favorite gravel race, no bike does it better than the new Diverge. This bike is ideally suited for any type of gravel riding you have in mind, from casual spins with friends to hardcore training and racing. The Pathfinder tires have a very smooth center tread that rolls very quickly on paved and smooth dirt road surfaces. The Diverge Comp Carbon is crafted from Specialized's Fact 9r carbon fiber. It’s stable but responsive, and I find it fun and accommodating when I’m riding it on terrain at the rougher end. Given the rather sizable price difference between the Diverge Comp Carbon and Expert Carbon, though, I’m not sure the Di2 transmission is worth the premium. The Diverge Comp Carbon features the same game-changing FACT 9r Carbon frame and Future Shock 2.0 as our Pro build but spec'd with Shimano's mechanical shifting GRX 800 2x11 gravel group. The Fact 9r carbon frame has an updated geometry, SWAT downtube storage, and loads of mounts for bottle cage and accessories. Out back is the usual flat-mount disc brake interface. On the 56 cm size, for example, it’s only grown by a fairly modest 7 mm, which hardly takes the Diverge into hyper-progressive territory. Our suggestion would be to ride it first. The frame has mounts for two water bottles within the front triangle, as well as a variety of mounts on the fork, top tube, and rear triangle to accommodate racks and frame bags. One small quirk of the down tube storage box is that some bottle cages will need to be spaced out a bit. Reach dimensions have increased across the board, albeit not by a tremendous amount. Specialized certainly could have gone the safe route in redesigning its popular Diverge range of gravel bikes, with a bit more tire clearance, some slight adjustments in head tube angle and bottom bracket height, maybe a few additional mounts — and, of course, the usual updated colors and graphics. For me it is a bike that tries to be the jack of all trades and most of the time, it delivers. A reinforcing rib is molded into the crown of the fork. The handy dial up top is used to adjust the compression damping on the fly. Travel is still limited to a modest 20 mm courtesy of a steel coil spring and a series of roller bearings. Speaking of the wheels on the Comp and Expert models, they’re rather ho-hum. This saddle proved to be especially comfortable, no matter the length of the ride, with an excellent shape and a generous anatomical relief channel/cutout. Things have grown longer out back as well, with chainstays now measuring 425 mm across the board — a gain of 5 mm. The head tube angle has been slacked to 71.75-degrees with a 73.5-degree seat tube angle. Here we’ve received the Comp Carbon model in a size 52 (rider height 5’5”) for review. Dave unfortunately didn’t get a weight for the one he rode, but with a retail price of US$10,000 / AU$16,000 / £8,900 / €NA, let’s just assume it’s pretty light. However, the short stem reduces the amount of physical movement required to initiate turns, while the wider bar keeps the front wheel from just falling over to either side. We found that it worked much better on single impacts, and it had a hard time recovering from successive bumps in the road. The Diverge Comp Carbon features the same game changing FACT 9r Carbon frame and Future Shock 2.0 as our Pro build but spec’d with Shimano’s mechanical shifting GRX 800 2x11 gravel group. SRAM’s “mullet” wireless groupset works very well with fast and precise shifts, and it offers a generous amount of range, albeit at the expense of larger gaps between individual gears. “It doesn’t give a perceptible bob unless out of the saddle, and even then, it’s not enough to bother me,” Iain said. I’ve long been a proponent of the quality of travel being more important than the quantity, and in my opinion, that becomes even more critical when you don’t have much travel to play with. The feed bag mount on the top tube can also be used for a bottle cage if so desired. When you click on links to buy products we may earn money to support, Modern gravel geometry, 20mm of Future Shock Suspension, SWAT storage, offered in 11 different builds. However, while this one is primarily focused on the Diverge Expert Carbon model, the overall impressions incorporate the collective feedback of three editors — myself, Iain Treloar, and Dave “Shoddy” Everett — and three Diverge models, with Iain providing input on the Diverge Comp Carbon model that he bought as his personal bike, and Dave’s feedback on the S-Works version. Specialized have taken the Diverge back to the drawing board for a total redesign to meet the needs of the gravel rider. Beyond these more affordable models, Specialized makes 3 more expensive carbon models ascending in price up to the top of the line S-Works Diverge that will set you back a whopping $10,000. We are talking about gravel bikes here, after all, and there’s a strong argument to be made that sacrificing a bit of bottom bracket stiffness (and, presumably, some pedaling efficiency) in favor of rider comfort is a more effective way of increasing overall performance on anything other than perfectly smooth tarmac. “On the rocky fireroads and rough singletrack that I mostly ride this bike on, it’s outstanding having a bit of extra give at the front end, and I feel much less beaten up in the shoulders than on other gravel bikes I’ve used (most recently including the Parlee Chebacco).
